Peter G. Broustis

On March 17, 2023, the “Greatest Generation” lost one of their best. Peter’s life, spanning 99 1/2 years, was guided by the values of duty, personal responsibility, and the love and protection of family and friends. He served in WWII in the 345th Regiment 87th Infantry Division of “Patton’s Army”, as a combat medic. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and served with one of the first troops to liberate Dachau concentration camp, which he recalled as “man’s greatest inhumanity to man”. As a result of his heroism, he saved the lives of fellow soldiers and was awarded The Bronze Star for his “courage and unselfish devotion to duty”. 

In recent years, Peter had the great privilege of being part of the Honor Flight and was interviewed by the legendary, Paul Meincke for his “Honor. Thank. Inspire. An Honor Flight Chicago” Podcast.

After the war, Peter returned to Chicago, graduated college and began his 50-year business career at the Bee Bindery, ultimately becoming the owner. He served as BIA President and held many positions of leadership in affiliated industry trade organizations throughout the years. In 1951 Peter married the love of his life, Bertha Malapanis whom he had known since high school. They were married 67 years, until Bertha’s passing in 2018 and credited their many years together to the power of love and laughter. Together they created their own Camelot with countless friends and family. The ultimate hosts, they made even a casual dinner out seem like a major celebration and always made those around them feel special. 

Peter’s “light” entered a room long before he crossed the threshold. Though always quick with his wry humor and a bit (a lot!) of sarcasm, he was always a gentleman and, truly, a “gentle” man. He was a great inspiration and role model to many, and his legendary generosity touched everyone who knew him. If there was a person in need he never hesitated to help. 

He was a loving man of honor and integrity. He never judged, lectured, or coached. Instead, with his huge personality and caring way, he led by example, always believing in doing the “right thing” in hope others would follow suit. He lived his life with purpose and loved all unconditionally.

Among those he loved the most and left behind with indelible fond memories of his infinite words of wisdom, are daughter Jan Jones (Gary), granddaughter, Taylor, son George Broustis (Joan), grandchildren, Peter, Paige, and DeeDee, nieces; Renee Stevens, Christine Alesia, Petra Foo, nephews; Danny, Jimmy, and David Broustis, and so many, many more… He was preceded into the arms of our Lord by his late brothers Daniel and Frank Broustis and brother-in-law Chris Malas. 

So, Peter, we hope this finds you with a CC Manhattan in hand, Bertha at your side, and a room full of family and friends who began their “new journey” before you. Thank you for being such a positive influence in all our lives. Cheers to you and to a life very, very well lived! God bless you and may your memory be eternal. 

Friends and family will meet for visitation at 9:30 AM on Thursday, March 23rd, 2023 with funeral services to follow at 10:00AM at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, 2350 E. Dempster Street, Des Plaines, IL, 60016. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL. Family requests no flowers.
