Kanella “Nelly” Haleas nee Lizas, age 73, fell asleep in our Lord on October 31, 2022. Beloved wife of 51 years to the late Panagiotis. Loving mother of John (Diana) and Mike (Mary). Proud Yiayia (grandmother) of Peter and Chris. Dear sister of the late Helen (Louis) Latsis. Darling daughter of the late Michael and Efrosini Lizas. As a young woman, she and her husband came to America from Greece. Despite not knowing the language, she became a licensed cosmetologist, which was her dream job; however, she preferred to work side by side with her adoring husband at their small business. She was also inseparable from her sister who despite the miles between them spoke at least once a day. She was very proud of her two loving sons and was always at their wrestling matches and award ceremonies while growing up. As time went on, her focus was her two caring grandsons, catering to their every whim. They loved Yiayia’s cooking and baking, especially the yemista and diples. Yiayia’s favorite food was moussaka, but, being selfless, never made it since the boys did not like it. They were delighted when she ordered it at our many dinners at the Greek restaurants. Her grandson Peter was always happy to share Greek coffee with her and enjoyable conversation. Her grandson Chris thoroughly enjoyed his Yiayia’s tiropites and stories. Her family meant more to her than anything else in the world, something she often mentioned. She was unendingly proud of her sons, John & Mike, and her grandchildren, Peter & Chris, and always showed them how much she loved them. Anyone who knew her, knew that she was the most loving mother and wife a family could ask for. Her children have been told countless times how lucky they were to have such an amazing mother; a sentiment they echoed. Dear aunt, cousin, godmother, and friend to many who will miss her dearly. Family and friends will meet at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church, 2701 Sheffield Avenue, Chicago, IL 60614 on Saturday, November 5, at 11:30 AM for visitation with funeral service to follow at 12:30 PM. Interment Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made in Nelly’s name to Saint Basil Academy, 79 Saint Basil Road, Garrison, NY 10524.
