Veteran and Community Service Funerals
The men and women who served our nation – and the neighbors who lifted up our communities – deserve farewells worthy of their sacrifice. Memory Eternal Funeral Directors is honored to arrange veteran funerals with full military honors, from flag-folding ceremonies and Taps to burial in national cemeteries. We also serve first responders, clergy, educators, and civic leaders with tributes that reflect lives of quiet dedication. Our team handles the VA paperwork, honors coordination, and every detail with precision and gratitude.

Full Military Honors
Eligible veterans receive flag folding and presentation, the playing of Taps, and honor guard participation. We verify eligibility quickly and schedule with the appropriate branch - even during the most difficult hours.

VA Benefits & Paperwork
Burial allowances, grave markers, headstones, and Presidential Memorial Certificates all involve government forms. We complete and file them accurately so every benefit arrives without frustrating delays.

Community Service Tributes
Police, firefighters, teachers, clergy, and volunteers shape Chicago's neighborhoods. We design processions, badge ceremonies, and memorial displays that celebrate a life devoted to serving others.
Why Veteran & Community Service Funerals Matter?
A Debt of Gratitude
Service members and community heroes gave years of their lives for others. A dignified farewell is how a grateful nation and neighborhood say thank you one final, formal time.
Benefits Families Earned
Many families never claim VA burial benefits simply because the paperwork feels overwhelming. We navigate the system for you, recovering every dollar and recognition your loved one earned.
Rituals Bring Comfort
The crack of rifle volleys, the folded flag placed gently in loving hands - these time-honored rituals give mourners structure, meaning, and pride in the midst of sorrow.
Stories That Inspire
Military and community funerals gather generations to hear stories of courage, sacrifice, and service. They become living lessons in character that outlive us all.
Precision Under Pressure
Honor guards, cemetery schedules, and benefit deadlines demand flawless coordination. Our experience means nothing falls through the cracks on the day your family needs perfection most.
Every Veteran Counts
From combat tours to peacetime service, from decorated generals to quietly humble privates - every veteran's funeral deserves equal care, attention, and respect from the team they trusted.

Guided by Experience & Respect
Our directors have arranged hundreds of services honoring veterans and community servants. We know the protocols, the people, and the paperwork - and we treat every detail as a matter of honor.

Veteran & Community Service Funeral Questions
Who qualifies for military funeral honors?
Under federal law, every veteran with a discharge other than dishonorable – plus service members who die on active duty – is entitled to military funeral honors at no cost. This includes National Guard and Reserve members who completed their required service. We verify eligibility with the veteran’s DD-214 or equivalent records and arrange everything directly with the honoring unit.
What do full military honors include?
Core honors consist of the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps, performed by at least two uniformed service members. Many families also receive rifle volleys, a bugler, and full honor guard details when personnel availability allows. We request the fullest honors possible for your hero.
Is there a cost for military honors?
Military honors themselves are provided free of charge by the Department of Defense. Costs apply only to the funeral home services, casket or urn, cemetery property, and optional elements like additional buglers. We explain exactly what is covered by the government and what your family chooses to add – before anything is scheduled.
Can a veteran be buried in a national cemetery?
Yes. Eligible veterans, spouses, and eligible dependents may be buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and other national cemeteries at no cost for the grave, opening and closing, perpetual care, marker, and vault where required. Space is limited in some sections, so early coordination matters – our team manages the entire application.
What VA burial benefits are available?
Depending on circumstances, benefits can include burial and plot allowances, transportation costs for deaths connected to VA care, government-furnished headstones or markers, Presidential Memorial Certificates, and burial flags. Survivors’ pensions may also apply. We complete the VA forms on your behalf so nothing is missed and nothing is left unclaimed.
How long does it take to receive VA benefits?
Most families receive benefit decisions within weeks once paperwork is filed correctly – incomplete applications cause most delays. Our staff submits claims promptly and follows up with the VA until payment arrives. Allowances are typically paid after funeral costs are documented, and we structure invoices to make reimbursement straightforward.
Do spouses qualify for burial benefits?
Yes. Spouses and certain dependent children of eligible veterans may be buried alongside them in national cemeteries, receiving their own gravesites, markers, and committal services – even if they predecease or survive the veteran by many years. We register family members together so future arrangements are already prepared.
What documents prove veteran status?
The key document is the DD-214 (Report of Separation) or similar discharge paperwork. If it cannot be located, we help families request replacements quickly from the National Archives. Photographs of medals, VA cards, or union membership records can support verification while official documents arrive.
Can cremated remains receive military honors?
Yes. Cremated remains receive full military honors including flag presentation and Taps, and may be inurned in national cemetery columbaria or buried in gravesites. Whether your family chooses traditional burial or cremation, the tribute owed to your veteran is identical – and we coordinate both paths seamlessly.
How far ahead must cemetery services be scheduled?
National cemetery committals typically schedule one to two weeks out depending on demand, while private cemetery timing is more flexible. Military honors requests should go in as soon as dates firm up. We handle all scheduling calls, confirmations, and any adjustments – you make one call, and we manage the rest.
What is a Presidential Memorial Certificate?
It is an engraved certificate signed by the current President expressing the nation’s grateful recognition of honorable military service. Any veteran qualifies, and certificates are commonly displayed at services or presented to families afterward. We request them automatically as part of our standard veteran funeral coordination.
Do you serve police and firefighter funerals?
Yes. We regularly serve Chicago Police, Fire Department, paramedic, and corrections officer funerals, coordinating badge shrouds, last radio calls, mounted units, pipe and drum corps, and department honor guards where available. These tributes follow each department’s traditions – our role is making them happen flawlessly.
Are religious traditions accommodated?
Absolutely. Catholic Masses, Protestant services, Jewish customs, Muslim janazah prayers, Orthodox traditions – we work with your clergy and honor every rite. For Latino veterans we offer fully bilingual services, and chaplain coordination is available for families without a home congregation. Faith and honors complement each other beautifully.
Can the funeral include a procession?
Yes, and processions hold special meaning for services honoring public servants. We plan routes past meaningful locations – stations, schools, union halls, churches – coordinate police escorts through Chicago and suburban departments, and stage vehicles precisely. Families consistently tell us the procession becomes one of their most treasured memories.
What if discharge papers are lost?
We can order replacement discharge records from the National Archives, often within days for emergency cases. County recorder offices may also hold copies recorded decades ago. Bring whatever fragments you have – even an old photograph of the document helps – and our team will handle the retrieval process.
How do we begin arrangements?
Call (847) 375-0095 (available 24/7) or visit us in Des Plaines. Bring the DD-214 if available; if not, we will obtain it. From the first call we begin eligibility verification, benefit applications, and honors coordination immediately – your only task is being with family while we take care of everything else.

Reflections from Families We’ve Served
EXCELLENT Based on 52 reviews Posted on Google Charmaine LazarTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. There are not enough words to describe how satisfied our family was with Vanessa and the Memory Eternal Funeral Directors team. Every detail of our mother’s funeral was handled so professionally. Our family lives out of town and they worked with us over Zoom to get as much planning done ahead of us arriving for the funeral. Our mother looked as beautiful as ever as if she were asleep. Flowers were arranged beautifully. The funeral procession was lead by escort cars that allowed for a smooth funeral procession. All the same professionalism that was given to our father’s funeral 15 years ago was given to our mother. For that, we are forever grateful. We really recommend Memory Eternal Funeral Directors 1000%.Posted on Google charlene abrahamTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I wish I could find the words to express the compassion and kindness I experienced with Memory Eternal. Vanessa was so understanding and accommodating. I cannot say enough good things. I have so much to commend Vanessa and Ari for, that I cannot possibly put it all into words. I'll try my best. My Father passed away and it was horrifically painful. So many arrangements had to be made so quickly. Ari was very professional, detail-orientated, and made the process very smooth. Vanessa was extraordinarily helpful, caring, and sweet. If it wasn't for her, there is NO way I could have gotten through this. I am so thankful that my Father had made arrangements with her prior to his passing. I could not imagine going through the process with anyone other than Vanessa and her company. It was the first funeral I ever had to arrange as an adult - as both my parents were gone. From collection of my Father's body, selection of coffin, St. George church arrangements, financial details, floral arrangements, prayer cards, the live bugler and National Guard personnel, cemetery, and grieving, she may it as smooth of a process as it could be. The mortician respectfully made my Father look wonderful for his final resting place. Also, we were very impressed how they secured intersections while our funeral procession went through. I am so thankful Vanessa made my Father's military service a priority and she arranged such a special and heart-touching moment when the live bugler played Taps. I'm forever grateful for that. Just grieving took all my brain space capacity, so I am beyond thankful we ended up in her hands. Her wonderfully sweet puppy made for the best emotional support as well. I highly recommend her! <3 <3Posted on Google Laura PetersonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
