Why Veteran & Community Service Funerals Matter?

A Debt of Gratitude

Service members and community heroes gave years of their lives for others. A dignified farewell is how a grateful nation and neighborhood say thank you one final, formal time.

Benefits Families Earned

Many families never claim VA burial benefits simply because the paperwork feels overwhelming. We navigate the system for you, recovering every dollar and recognition your loved one earned.

Rituals Bring Comfort

The crack of rifle volleys, the folded flag placed gently in loving hands - these time-honored rituals give mourners structure, meaning, and pride in the midst of sorrow.

Veteran & Community Service Funeral Questions

Who qualifies for military funeral honors?

Under federal law, every veteran with a discharge other than dishonorable – plus service members who die on active duty – is entitled to military funeral honors at no cost. This includes National Guard and Reserve members who completed their required service. We verify eligibility with the veteran’s DD-214 or equivalent records and arrange everything directly with the honoring unit.

Core honors consist of the folding and presentation of the American flag to the next of kin and the playing of Taps, performed by at least two uniformed service members. Many families also receive rifle volleys, a bugler, and full honor guard details when personnel availability allows. We request the fullest honors possible for your hero.

Military honors themselves are provided free of charge by the Department of Defense. Costs apply only to the funeral home services, casket or urn, cemetery property, and optional elements like additional buglers. We explain exactly what is covered by the government and what your family chooses to add – before anything is scheduled.

Yes. Eligible veterans, spouses, and eligible dependents may be buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery and other national cemeteries at no cost for the grave, opening and closing, perpetual care, marker, and vault where required. Space is limited in some sections, so early coordination matters – our team manages the entire application.

Depending on circumstances, benefits can include burial and plot allowances, transportation costs for deaths connected to VA care, government-furnished headstones or markers, Presidential Memorial Certificates, and burial flags. Survivors’ pensions may also apply. We complete the VA forms on your behalf so nothing is missed and nothing is left unclaimed.

Most families receive benefit decisions within weeks once paperwork is filed correctly – incomplete applications cause most delays. Our staff submits claims promptly and follows up with the VA until payment arrives. Allowances are typically paid after funeral costs are documented, and we structure invoices to make reimbursement straightforward.

Yes. Spouses and certain dependent children of eligible veterans may be buried alongside them in national cemeteries, receiving their own gravesites, markers, and committal services – even if they predecease or survive the veteran by many years. We register family members together so future arrangements are already prepared.

The key document is the DD-214 (Report of Separation) or similar discharge paperwork. If it cannot be located, we help families request replacements quickly from the National Archives. Photographs of medals, VA cards, or union membership records can support verification while official documents arrive.

Yes. Cremated remains receive full military honors including flag presentation and Taps, and may be inurned in national cemetery columbaria or buried in gravesites. Whether your family chooses traditional burial or cremation, the tribute owed to your veteran is identical – and we coordinate both paths seamlessly.

National cemetery committals typically schedule one to two weeks out depending on demand, while private cemetery timing is more flexible. Military honors requests should go in as soon as dates firm up. We handle all scheduling calls, confirmations, and any adjustments – you make one call, and we manage the rest.

It is an engraved certificate signed by the current President expressing the nation’s grateful recognition of honorable military service. Any veteran qualifies, and certificates are commonly displayed at services or presented to families afterward. We request them automatically as part of our standard veteran funeral coordination.

Yes. We regularly serve Chicago Police, Fire Department, paramedic, and corrections officer funerals, coordinating badge shrouds, last radio calls, mounted units, pipe and drum corps, and department honor guards where available. These tributes follow each department’s traditions – our role is making them happen flawlessly.

Absolutely. Catholic Masses, Protestant services, Jewish customs, Muslim janazah prayers, Orthodox traditions – we work with your clergy and honor every rite. For Latino veterans we offer fully bilingual services, and chaplain coordination is available for families without a home congregation. Faith and honors complement each other beautifully.

Yes, and processions hold special meaning for services honoring public servants. We plan routes past meaningful locations – stations, schools, union halls, churches – coordinate police escorts through Chicago and suburban departments, and stage vehicles precisely. Families consistently tell us the procession becomes one of their most treasured memories.

We can order replacement discharge records from the National Archives, often within days for emergency cases. County recorder offices may also hold copies recorded decades ago. Bring whatever fragments you have – even an old photograph of the document helps – and our team will handle the retrieval process.

Call (847) 375-0095 (available 24/7) or visit us in Des Plaines. Bring the DD-214 if available; if not, we will obtain it. From the first call we begin eligibility verification, benefit applications, and honors coordination immediately – your only task is being with family while we take care of everything else.
