Close up shot of an old lady smiling at the camera

Maria Sellas née Skoubis, age 86, fell asleep in the Lord July 5, 2023. Beloved wife of the late Gus Sellas for 50 years. Loving mother of Angelo Sellas, Betty (Stathe) Paganis and John Sellas. Devoted daughter of the late John and Lamprini Skoubis. Proud grandmother of Stacie, Annalise and Anthony Paganis. Dear sister of the late Gregory (the late Katherine) Skoubis, Irini (the late Evagelos) Kyriazopoulos, the late Nicholas (Nota) Skoubis, the late Konstandino (Maria) Skoubis, and the late Dimosthenis (Julia) Skoubis. Sister-in-law of the late the late Eleni (the late George) Sofantzopoulos, the late Jim (Anna) Sellas, the late Ted (Mary) Sellas, the late Stella (Sam) Zervas and Chris (Vicki) Sellas. Fond aunt and cousin of many.

Maria was born in Achladokambos, Greece, and immigrated as a bride to the west side of Chicago, later moving to their long-time home in Addison, IL. She was a tower of strength as she learned the language and ways of her new country while becoming a mother. She was blessed in many ways but knew significant struggles, as well.  Throughout all, she remained a woman of steadfastness, faith, and tenderness to all around her.

Gus and Maria’s marriage was an example of devotion and partnership. Gus adored Maria, and he would often tell others that he won the lotto when he married her. Their three children never doubted the love of their parents. Maria adored her children and modeled selfless love, resilience, integrity, and humor. Her children will miss her endless support, encouragement, wisdom, and especially her calm nature and humor.

Maria was a loving, compassionate, giving, humble lady of quiet dignity. She touched many lives through her gift of listening, offering encouragement and practical advice. Lives were also shaped by her example of character; her demeanor and attitude never wavered, even amidst great challenges.  Her sweet smile and wittiness will always be remembered. All who had the privilege to know her will miss her, most especially her beloved family.
