Born November 6, 1928, Mary Mammas (nee Zeheralis) was the youngest of two children born of the marriage between Luca and Glikeria Zeheralis.  She and her older brother, the late Chris Zeheralis attended Froebel High School, Gary, Indiana, where Mary graduated in 1947.  Mary Zeheralis met James E. Mammas during the winter of 1946, became engaged in August of 1947, and were married on February 15, 1948.

Mary stood at the side of her husband, Jim, while he formed J. E. Mammas Floor Covering in Chicago Heights, Illinois, and in 1962 expanded his business to Gary, Indiana where he added his brother-in-law Chris Zeheralis as a partner and changed the name of his company to Mammas and Zeheralis, Inc. Wall and Floor Covering and the business prospered until their retirement in January of 1988.

Mary was a steward and devoted member of SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Merrillville, Indiana and SS. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview, Illinois.  She was a member of SS. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.  Mary was an active participant and member of Volunteers in Partnership (V.I.P.’s) with Methodist Hospital in Merrillville, Indiana, providing help and care to patients and their families.

A loving wife to the late James E. Mammas for 63 years, a beloved mother to Lucia Greenawalt, Evan James (Marika) Mammas and Paula (Peter) Guletsky.  Cherish sister to the late Chris (Mary “Becky”) Zeheralis and loving aunt to her nieces and nephews.  

Mary was adored by her grandchildren: Ryan (Kana) Greenawalt, Darrin (Sarah) Greenawalt, Nathan (Courtney) Greenawalt, Marysa Leah Greenawalt, Caidi (Steve) Vanderporten, Joanna Marie Mammas, Anastasia (Robert) Kelly, Tatiana Guletsky and the late Alexander James Guletsky.

As it has been stated: Death takes the Body; God takes the Soul; Our minds hold the Memories; Our hearts keep the Love and Our Faith lets us know we will meet again.

Family only will gather on Saturday morning, January 18, 2020, for Private Funeral Services at SS Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church, 1401 Wagner Road, Glenview, IL 60025.  Interment also private.
