Helen Askounis, nee Coolis, 97, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2020. Beloved wife of 67 years to Homer Askounis; loving mother of sons John (Michele Higgins) and Dean (Annette), and devoted daughter Themis; doting YiaYia to Alekos and Maria Askounis, Andrew and Lily Askounis; daughter of the late Peter and Georgia Coolis; sister of the late Theodora “Lou” (Henry Thole) and the late Constantinos “Gus”; sister-in-law of the late Orpheus Askounis (Norma), the late Themis Klotz, and fond aunt of Karen (Terry LaMastus), Kristen, Shawn, Edward Klotz, Audie Klotz (Paul Fenwick), David Thole (Nola), Doug Thole (Dianne) and Judy (Norm Carver).

Helen grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, met Homer and settled in the Chicago area to live and raise their family. She enjoyed summers at June Lake in northern Wisconsin. She loved to read and garden, was a dedicated Chicago baseball fan, and always approached life with style and grace. Helen adored her family and cherished their time together, including a vacation in Greece, weddings and numerous family celebrations. 

Mom, you loved us unconditionally and supported us all though our life’s adventures – our hearts are heavy and we miss you so much. We wish you peace.

Private service and interment at 10:30 AM on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at Elmwood Cemetery, River Grove, IL.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to a charity of your choosing.
